ChatGPT vs Claude for Small Business: Which Is Worth $20 a Month?
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 a month for one person — but the $20 buys range on one side and depth on the other. Compared by job, with prices checked on both vendors' pages in November 2026, and a straight pick for each kind of small business.
ChatGPT vs Claude for small business comes down to one awkward fact: both cost exactly $20 a month for one person, and your $20 buys very different things. ChatGPT Plus spends it on range — image creation, voice, a coding agent, scheduled tasks and a large app ecosystem, all in one place. Claude Pro spends it on depth — careful writing, long documents, a context window of up to 1M tokens and a coding agent of its own. Neither is the wrong buy. The wrong buy is paying for the one whose strengths you never use. This guide compares them by the jobs a small business actually does — checked on both vendors' own pricing pages in November 2026 — and gives a straight recommendation for each kind of business.
ChatGPT vs Claude for small business: the short answer
Pick Claude Pro if your week is writing and reading: proposals, contracts, customer emails, long reports, anything where the words go out under your name. Pick ChatGPT Plus if your week is visual or varied: social graphics, product photos, voice notes on the move, quick research, and a bit of everything. Pay for both — $40 a month — if AI is the tool you open first every morning and you bill by the hour: one saved hour pays for both. Pay for neither if you use AI a few times a week: both free plans cover that, and the free version of ChatGPT now includes unlimited text chats.
| Your week looks like | Buy this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Writing proposals, contracts, customer emails | Claude Pro | Careful writing and long documents are its home ground |

| Reading long contracts, reports, tender documents | Claude Pro | Up to 1M tokens of context — a whole contract stack at once |
| A bit of everything, plus voice on the move | ChatGPT Plus | The broadest all-rounder, with voice built in |
| Coding help or building small internal tools | Either — pick the one you already live in | Both paid plans include a coding agent |
| Two or more people need it | A team plan, not two personal plans | Business and Team both cost $20 a seat on annual billing |

What ChatGPT Plus gives you for $20
Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly — and that is the only way to pay for it. OpenAI's own help page says there is no annual billing for Plus, so unlike Claude there is no $17-a-month version of this plan. What the $20 buys, on OpenAI's own pricing page: advanced reasoning models from the GPT-6 family, expanded messages and uploads, more complex and more accurate image creation, expanded deep research, expanded memory and context, Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Codex usage and expanded access to ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, plus early access to new features.
Two things to know before you pay. First, the free tier is genuinely usable: unlimited text chats with GPT-6, with limits only on uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research, memory and Codex. If your AI use is a few chats a week, Plus buys you almost nothing you will notice. Second, there is a cheaper tier now: Go at $8 a month, with more messages, uploads, images and voice than Free — but OpenAI's own page warns that Go "may include ads". And one caution dated November 2026: OpenAI has said custom GPTs stop running on 11 December 2026 as it moves them to plugins, so if custom GPTs are the reason you would buy Plus, that reason has an expiry date. Above Plus sit the Pro tiers at $100, $200 or $500 a month — far more than any small business needs to start.
What Claude Pro gives you for $20
Pro is $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month if you pay $200 up front for the year — the one pricing edge Claude has over ChatGPT, since Plus has no annual discount. What the $20 buys, on Anthropic's own pricing page: more usage than Free (at least 5x more per five-hour session), Fable, its top model, paid with usage credits, the ability to hand off and schedule tasks, Claude Dashboards in beta, Claude Code, Claude Science, Projects, access to more Claude models, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365.
The two features that decide most small-business buys are the context window and the coding agent. Claude lists a context window of up to 1M tokens, varying by model, on every plan including Free — you can drop a whole contract stack, a year of financials or a 200-page tender in and ask questions across all of it. OpenAI does publish context figures too: ChatGPT Plus gets 54K tokens for instant tasks and 256K for reasoning, so Claude's 1M is about four times the reasoning window and about eighteen times the instant one. And Claude Code, the coding agent, is included in all of Anthropic's paid plans and shares your plan's usage limits, so the chats and the code draw from one pool. Above Pro sit Max at $100 a month (5x Pro usage) and Ultra at $200 a month (10x weekly usage, no five-hour limit, and monthly API credits). The free tier is limited usage every five hours and every week, but it still includes web search, file work, code, memory, connectors and Artifacts — enough to test properly before paying.
ChatGPT vs Claude for small business: the team math
The moment a second person needs the tool, stop buying personal plans. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team cost the same to the dollar: $20 a seat a month on annual billing, or $25 billed monthly, with a two-seat minimum on both. That means the real entry price is not $20 — it is $40 a month on annual billing ($50 monthly) for two seats. Premium seats, for the heaviest users, are $100 a month annual ($125 monthly) on both. ChatGPT Business seats run from 2 to 200; Claude Team seats run from 2 to 150.
The team plans are also where the data question gets simple. Both vendors keep business workspace data out of model training by default — that is the deal on ChatGPT Business and on Claude Team, and it is the main reason a business with customer data should be on a team plan rather than two personal ones. Claude's own pricing page lists model training as opt-out on every plan, including Pro. On the personal side, ChatGPT Plus is a personal subscription: OpenAI may use your conversations for training unless you opt out, so customer names, prices and contract details do not belong in a Plus chat. For larger teams, Claude Enterprise lists $20 a seat a month plus usage billed at API rates, on annual billing; OpenAI does not publish a list price for ChatGPT Enterprise.
When to pay for both — and when to pay for neither
Both together cost $40 a month. That sounds like a lot until you price it against one billed hour: if you charge $50 an hour or more, a single hour saved in a month pays for both subscriptions. The businesses that get their money's worth from both are the ones where one person writes and makes visuals every day — the proposal in Claude in the morning, the social graphics in ChatGPT in the afternoon. If that is not your week, the second subscription sits unused, and unused software is the one expense a small business should never carry.
And the honest alternative is neither. ChatGPT Free gives you unlimited text chats with GPT-6; Claude Free gives you limited usage but real features — web search, Artifacts, connectors, file work. Run both free plans for two weeks. Pay for the one you open every day, and only that one. The free plans are also the right answer if AI is a sometimes tool for you — a few emails a week, the odd summary, a birthday post. Twenty dollars a month is cheap for a daily tool and expensive for a weekly one. Our guide to free AI tools for small business marketing covers what the free tiers of both tools can actually do, and our accounting guide shows where both assistants connect to QuickBooks and Xero.
Why it matters: the $20 is not the decision
Thryv's 2025 survey of 540 small-business decision-makers found AI adoption among firms with 10 to 100 employees jumped from 47% to 68% in a single year. The $20 question is now a normal business expense, like a phone plan — and like a phone plan, the choice matters far less than what you do with it. Both tools reward a proper setup far more than they reward picking the "right" one: a Projects folder with your price list, your brand voice and your standard replies in it will save you more in a week than the difference between these two plans ever will. The operators who get 3–4x the value from either tool are the ones who set it up once and use it the same way every day.
Two honest limits apply to both. Neither guarantees accuracy: both can write confident mistakes, miss context, or invent a detail that sounds right, so anything that goes to a customer — a quote, a contract summary, an apology — gets checked by a human first. And the details in this guide are a snapshot: model names rotate fast (the GPT-6 family is current as of November 2026; a year ago it was a different number), plans change without notice, and prices exclude tax. Frequently asked questions
ChatGPT vs Claude for small business — which one should I pick?
Pick Claude Pro if your week is writing and long documents — proposals, contracts, customer emails — and you want the 1M-token context window. Pick ChatGPT Plus if your week is visual or varied — social graphics, product images, voice, quick research. Both cost $20 a month for one person, so the choice is about the work, not the price.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month for a small business?
Yes, if you open it every day. Plus buys advanced GPT-6 reasoning, image creation, voice, deep research, Projects, scheduled tasks and expanded Codex access for $20 a month, billed monthly. If you use AI a few times a week, the free plan — unlimited text chats with GPT-6 — covers you, and Plus buys almost nothing you will notice.
Can I use ChatGPT and Claude together for $40 a month?
Yes — Claude Pro plus ChatGPT Plus is $40 a month, and it is worth it if one person writes and makes visuals every day. One saved billed hour a month pays for both. If only one of them is open on your screen daily, drop the other: an unused subscription is the one expense a small business should never carry.
Do ChatGPT Business and Claude Team cost the same?
Yes, to the dollar: $20 a seat a month on annual billing, or $25 billed monthly, with premium seats at $100 annual or $125 monthly on both. Both need a two-seat minimum, so the real entry price is $40 a month on annual billing. ChatGPT Business seats run from 2 to 200; Claude Team seats run from 2 to 150.
Should a small business pay for ChatGPT or Claude at all?
Only once one of them is a daily tool. The ChatGPT vs Claude for small business decision matters when AI is open on your screen every day — then $20 a month is cheap. If you use AI a few times a week, pay for neither: ChatGPT Free has unlimited text chats and Claude Free includes web search, Artifacts and connectors.
