Best AI Customer Service Tools for Small Business: Tidio vs Intercom vs Zendesk AI

By The Business AI Guide editorial team

Best AI customer service tools for small business — Tidio vs Intercom vs Zendesk AI comparison

Tidio, Intercom and Zendesk AI charge for the same job in three different ways — per conversation joined, per outcome, and per resolution plus a seat. We worked out the real monthly cost at 100, 500 and 1,000 AI conversations, with every price checked on the vendors' own pages in November 2026, and a straight pick for each kind of small business.

The best AI customer service tools for small business all promise the same thing: an AI that answers customers while you do other work. The pitch sounds identical on every vendor's homepage — until the invoice arrives. That is where these three part ways. Tidio charges per conversation its AI joins, Intercom charges per outcome its AI resolves, and Zendesk charges per automated resolution on top of a per-agent seat. Same job, three different bills.

This comparison does the maths nobody's homepage shows. We pulled the current prices from Tidio, Intercom and Zendesk's own pricing pages in November 2026, then worked out what 100, 500 and 1,000 AI-handled conversations a month actually cost on each one — base plan included. No free-trial figures, no "from" prices without the catch, and no hands-on testing claims: we did not run these tools, we read their prices and their terms. What follows is what a small business owner needs to decide in one sitting.

Best AI customer service tools for small business: the short answer

Pick Tidio if your budget is the constraint and your volume is under about 500 AI conversations a month: it is the cheapest per resolution on annual billing, and the only one of the three with a free plan that includes any AI at all. Pick Intercom if your questions are genuinely hard — technical faults, billing edge cases, account problems — and you want to pay only when the AI actually resolves something. Pick Zendesk if you already run Zendesk, or if most of your support arrives by email rather than live chat: its AI is the most expensive per resolution, and it only makes sense once the rest of Zendesk is already your helpdesk. The table below is the whole comparison in one glance; the rest of this article is the maths and the catches behind it.

Your situationBuy thisWhat you pay for the AI
Solo or two people, chat-first, tight budgetTidio Lyro$0.58–$0.65 per AI conversation (annual), plus a $24.17/mo base plan
Small team, hard questions, pay only for resultsIntercom Fin$0.99 per outcome the AI resolves, plus a $19/seat/mo base plan
Already on Zendesk, or email-first supportZendesk AIAbout $1.50 per automated resolution (committed), plus a $55/agent/mo base plan

What each AI resolution actually costs

The three vendors bill the same work three different ways, and the difference is worth real money. Tidio's Lyro bills per conversation it joins — whether it solves the problem or not. Intercom's Fin bills per outcome — only when the customer confirms the problem is solved, stops asking for more help, or Fin completes a workflow. Zendesk bills per automated resolution, on top of a per-agent seat. So a "cheap" per-unit price can still lose if the meter counts attempts instead of results — and that is exactly what the maths shows.

Start with what the AI meter itself charges. Tidio's Lyro add-on costs $39 a month for 50 conversations, $75 for 100, $140 for 200, $350 for 500 and $700 for 1,000 — or $32.50, $62.50, $116.67, $291.67 and $583.33 on annual billing. That works out to $0.78 a conversation at the small end and $0.70 at the large end on monthly billing, or $0.65 down to $0.58 a year. Intercom's Fin is a flat $0.99 per outcome, whatever your volume. Zendesk's per-resolution rate is not printed on its pricing page at all; two concordant reads of Zendesk's own pages in September and October 2026 put it at about $1.50 a resolution on a committed plan and about $2.00 pay-as-you-go.

ToolWhat the meter countsPrice per unit
Tidio LyroEach conversation Lyro joins (solved or not)$0.58–$0.65 per conversation (annual); $0.70–$0.78 (monthly)
Intercom FinEach outcome Fin resolves$0.99 per outcome
Zendesk AIEach automated resolutionAbout $1.50 (committed) / about $2.00 (pay-as-you-go)

Now add the base plan you have to buy first, and the picture sharpens. All prices below are annual billing with one seat or agent, and Tidio's figures assume Lyro resolves 75% of the conversations it joins — Tidio's own average — so the other 25% reach a human. At 100 AI conversations a month, Tidio costs $86.67 (Starter $24.17 plus the 100-conversation Lyro pack at $62.50), Intercom costs $118 (Essential $19 plus 100 outcomes at $0.99), and Zendesk costs $205 on the committed rate or $255 pay-as-you-go (Suite Team $55 plus resolutions). At 500, the totals are $340.84, $514 and $805 ($1,055 pay-as-you-go). At 1,000, they are $632.50, $1,009 and $1,555 ($2,055 pay-as-you-go).

AI conversations a monthTidio (total)Intercom (total)Zendesk (total)
100$86.67$118$205 committed / $255 pay-as-you-go
500$340.84$514$805 committed / $1,055 pay-as-you-go
1,000$632.50$1,009$1,555 committed / $2,055 pay-as-you-go

Two details in that table deserve a second look. First, Tidio's 500- and 1,000-conversation totals use the Growth plan ($49.17 a month), not Starter: at 75% resolution, 500 Lyro conversations send about 125 customers to a human, which breaks Starter's 100-conversation cap. Second, Intercom's $19 seat is the price shown on its pricing page today, with $29 struck through — the standard price in recent reads. At $29 a seat, add $10 to every Intercom total above.

And the fairest single number is the cost per actual resolution. Tidio charges per conversation joined, so at 75% resolution its $62.50 hundred-pack buys 75 resolutions — $0.83 each. At the 500- and 1,000-packs that falls to $0.78. Intercom is $0.99 flat. Zendesk is about $1.50 committed, about $2.00 pay-as-you-go. On monthly billing, Tidio's per-resolution cost is $1.00 at the hundred-pack — a dead heat with Fin — and $0.93 at the 500- and 1,000-packs. So Tidio is the cheapest AI per resolution, but only by about 20 cents, and only if you pay annually. That is the whole pricing story in one sentence.

Tidio Lyro — the cheapest AI per resolution

Lyro is Tidio's AI agent. It is trained on your help centre and website, answers in live chat and on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, and hands over to a human when it cannot answer. It is the only one of the three that comes with a genuinely free AI allowance — and the allowance has a catch worth reading twice.

The free plan costs $0 and includes 50 billable conversations a month plus 50 Lyro conversations — once. Those 50 free Lyro conversations are a one-time allowance — the plan card calls them "one-time" and the feature table "lifetime" — though Tidio's own FAQ adds that the free limit refreshes 30 days after account creation, so do not count on them as a monthly allowance. A shop that gets 20 AI chats a week burns through them in under three weeks, and after that Lyro stops unless you buy a pack. Treat the free plan as a trial with a hard stop, not as a free tier.

The paid plans are where Tidio's price advantage lives. Starter is $24.17 a month on annual billing ($29 monthly) and covers 100 billable conversations with the 50 one-off Lyro conversations included. Growth starts at $49.17 a month annual ($59 monthly), from 250 billable conversations up to 2,000. Plus is $300 a month plus usage, and Premium is priced on request, from 3,000 Lyro conversations, with a guaranteed 50% Lyro resolution rate and pay-per-resolution billing. The Lyro add-on itself is sold in packs: 50 conversations for $39 a month ($32.50 annual), 100 for $75 ($62.50), 200 for $140 ($116.67), 500 for $350 ($291.67) and 1,000 for $700 ($583.33). There is no published per-unit overage rate — when you run out, you buy a bigger pack.

Two meter rules can surprise a new customer. First, a conversation Lyro starts and a human finishes counts on both meters — you pay for the Lyro conversation and the human one. Second, the step from Growth to Plus is steep: $59 a month to $300. A business growing past 2,000 conversations a month should price Premium before it hits the Plus cliff. All plans include a 7-day free trial with no card required, and up to 10 seats on the self-serve plans.

Lyro resolves 75% of conversations on average, according to Tidio's own FAQ — a vendor claim, not an independent test. One independent tester, in a single March 2026 test, measured Lyro at 70.2% resolution against Intercom Fin's 78.4%. Take both numbers as rough guides, not guarantees: your resolution rate will depend on how good your help centre is, which is true of all three tools. If your marketing budget is as tight as your support budget, our guide to free AI tools for small business marketing covers eight tools that cost nothing to start with.

Intercom Fin — the best AI for hard questions

Fin is Intercom's AI agent, and it is the only one of the three that charges only for success. The price is $0.99 per outcome, and an outcome means the customer confirms the problem is solved, stops asking for more help, or Fin completes a workflow — charged once per conversation. If Fin tries and fails, you do not pay for the attempt. That is the cleanest deal in this comparison, and it is also why Fin wins the hard-question test: Intercom can afford to let Fin attempt difficult conversations because failed attempts cost the customer nothing.

Fin is included in every Intercom plan, and it can also be bought on its own: standalone Fin costs $0.99 an outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum ($49.50 a month) and no seats at all. That makes it the only one of the three you can run without buying a helpdesk seat — useful if you already have a helpdesk you like and just want an AI on top of it.

The seats themselves are where Intercom gets expensive. Essential is shown at $19 a seat a month today, with $29 struck through — the standard price in recent reads of the page. Advanced is $85 a seat a month and Expert is $132. Every plan includes Fin plus unlimited live chat, email and in-app messaging. The Copilot add-on — AI that drafts replies and suggests answers for your human agents — is $29 an agent a month on annual billing ($35 monthly), and the Pro add-on is $100 a month. There is a 14-day free trial with no card required, a one-seat minimum, and startups can get up to 93% off.

On results, Intercom's own customer Robin reported a 50% resolution rate with Fin. The same independent March 2026 test that measured Lyro at 70.2% put Fin at 78.4% — again, one tester's figures, not a benchmark. One structural fact is worth knowing before you buy: Salesforce completed its acquisition of Intercom on 10 September 2026. That may change nothing for a small business, but it is the kind of ownership change that has historically meant price and packaging changes within a year or two — check the pricing page again before you renew. If you already use a chatbot-style assistant for other work, our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison for small business covers what $20 a month buys on each side.

Zendesk AI — the best AI if you already run Zendesk

Zendesk's AI agents sit inside Zendesk's helpdesk, and that is both the pitch and the problem. If your support already lives in Zendesk — email, chat, voice and social in one queue — the AI is a switch you flip. If it does not, Zendesk is the most expensive way in this comparison to get an AI, and the pricing page does not even print the per-resolution rate.

The cheapest Zendesk plan, Support Team at $19 an agent a month on annual billing ($25 monthly), does not include AI agents at all. The AI starts at Suite Team: $55 an agent a month annual ($69 monthly). Suite Professional is $115 annual ($149 monthly). Suite Enterprise is priced on request. The Copilot add-on is $50 an agent a month annual — the page does not say which plans it applies to. One sourcing note: the pricing page as rendered today quotes annual billing only, with no monthly figures shown; the monthly figures in brackets are Zendesk's US list prices from earlier reads. Zendesk's own claim is that its AI agents resolve up to 80% or more of even the most complex service issues — a vendor claim, like Tidio's 75%.

The per-resolution price — about $1.50 on a committed plan, about $2.00 pay-as-you-go — comes from two concordant reads of Zendesk's own pages in September and October 2026, because the current pricing page does not publish it. At those rates, 500 resolutions a month cost $750 on top of the $55 seat, against $495 for the same 500 outcomes on Intercom and $291.67 for 500 Lyro conversations on Tidio. The gap is real money at any volume, which is why the recommendation is narrow: buy Zendesk AI if you already run Zendesk. Buying Zendesk to get its AI is paying a premium for a helpdesk you do not need.

One exception is worth a line: Zendesk for Startups offers a six-month Suite trial for up to 50 agents. A new company that expects to grow into a multi-channel helpdesk anyway can test the whole stack — AI included — for half a year before paying. There is also a standard 14-day trial on the paid plans.

How to pick the best AI customer service tools for small business in 10 minutes

Count last month's support conversations first — the number decides everything else. Then split them into routine and judgement: order status, opening hours, returns and password resets are routine; billing disputes, technical faults and anything involving money are judgement. If routine is under half your volume, none of these three will save much: an AI can only automate what is repeatable. If routine is most of it, the rules below pick the tool.

Under 50 AI conversations a month: start on Tidio Free. The 50 one-off Lyro conversations will last a few weeks — enough to learn whether your customers accept an AI answer. When they run out, the $39 monthly Lyro pack is the cheapest next step.

Solo or two people, chat-first, tight budget: Tidio Starter plus the Lyro 100-pack — $86.67 a month on annual billing for 100 AI conversations, the cheapest total in this comparison.

Small team, hard questions, or you hate paying for attempts: Intercom Essential plus Fin — $118 a month for 100 outcomes, and you pay nothing for the conversations Fin fails to resolve.

Already on Zendesk, or most support arrives by email: Zendesk Suite Team — $205 a month for 100 resolutions on the committed rate. Do not buy Zendesk just for the AI. All of our customer service guides live in one place — see the customer service category.

What the best AI customer service tools for small business still can't do

The risk in this decision is not the monthly bill — it is a customer who gets a wrong answer and never comes back. Clutch surveyed 422 consumers and found 87% had used AI-powered customer support and 72% used it regularly — but 67% had considered, or actually stopped, doing business with a company after a bad AI interaction. Two out of three customers have a line, and a bad AI answer can cross it.

That is why the limits matter more than the feature lists. None of these three can take responsibility for a decision: refunds, credits and exceptions need rules you write in advance, or a human in the loop. None of them knows what is not in your help centre — the AI is only as accurate as the pages you feed it, and a thin help centre produces confident wrong answers. And none of them fixes a bad handoff: the moment that matters most is not the AI's first answer but the second message, when a frustrated customer meets a human who has no idea what the AI just said. Test that handoff before you launch, not after.

The direction of travel is clear either way. Thryv's 2025 survey of 540 small-business decision-makers found AI adoption rising from 47% to 68% in a year. Your competitors are putting an AI in front of their customers. The question is not whether to do it — it is whether to do it with a meter that matches your volume and a handoff your customers will not notice.

Why it matters: the first 30 days decide whether it pays

Start small and measure honestly. Feed the AI your 20 most-asked questions first — the ones your team answers in their sleep — and leave the rest with humans. Watch the resolution rate weekly, not daily, and read the conversations the AI escalated: they are the fastest way to find the help-centre pages you still need to write. Set the handoff rule before launch — who takes over, how fast, and what the human sees — because that rule is what the customer remembers.

Of the best AI customer service tools for small business, the cheapest is the one whose meter matches your volume: Tidio for the smallest budgets, Intercom when you want to pay only for resolutions, Zendesk when it is already your helpdesk. Prices move — Intercom's Essential seat is mid-promotion right now, and Tidio's Plus plan changed since October — so check the vendor's pricing page again on the day you buy, and re-check it at renewal. The AI is the easy part. The bill is the decision. We price-check every figure in our guides on the vendors' own pages before publishing — read how we work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI customer service tool for small business?

It depends on your volume and budget. Of the best AI customer service tools for small business, Tidio Lyro is the cheapest per resolution on annual billing, Intercom Fin is the best choice when your questions are hard and you want to pay only for resolutions, and Zendesk AI is the right pick only if you already run Zendesk. There is no single best tool — there is a best tool for your volume.

How much does Tidio Lyro cost per conversation?

The Lyro add-on costs $39 a month for 50 conversations, $75 for 100, $140 for 200, $350 for 500 and $700 for 1,000 — or $32.50, $62.50, $116.67, $291.67 and $583.33 on annual billing. That is $0.78 a conversation at the small end and $0.70 at the large end on monthly billing, or $0.65 down to $0.58 a year. Because Lyro bills per conversation joined, not per resolution, the cost per actual resolution is higher: at Tidio's own 75% resolution average, the 100-pack works out to $0.83 per resolution on annual billing.

What is Intercom Fin's price per resolution?

Fin costs $0.99 per outcome — an outcome is a conversation the customer confirms is resolved, stops asking for more help about, or Fin completes as a workflow. It is charged once per conversation, and failed attempts cost nothing. Standalone Fin has a 50-outcome monthly minimum ($49.50 a month) with no seats; inside a plan, you also pay the seat — Essential is shown at $19 a seat a month today, with $29 struck through.

Does Zendesk AI charge per resolution?

Yes. Zendesk AI agents cost about $1.50 per automated resolution on a committed plan and about $2.00 pay-as-you-go, on top of the seat — AI agents start at Suite Team, $55 an agent a month on annual billing. The cheapest plan, Support Team at $19, does not include AI agents. The per-resolution rate is not printed on Zendesk's pricing page; the figures come from two concordant reads of Zendesk's own pages in September and October 2026.

Is there a free AI customer service tool for small business?

Among the best AI customer service tools for small business, Tidio is the only one with a free AI allowance: the free plan includes 50 Lyro conversations, but they are a one-time allowance — the plan card calls them 'one-time' and the feature table 'lifetime', and Tidio's FAQ adds a 30-day refresh line, so do not count on a monthly allowance. Intercom and Zendesk offer 14-day free trials but no free AI tier. For a business under 50 AI conversations a month, Tidio Free is a genuine way to test whether your customers accept an AI answer before you pay anything.
