Best AI Writing Tools for Small Business: Jasper vs Copy.ai vs ChatGPT
Jasper, Copy.ai and ChatGPT charge for writing in three different ways — per seat, per five seats, and per person. We worked out the real monthly cost for one, three and five writers, with every price checked in November 2026, and a straight pick for each kind of small business.
The best AI writing tools for small business all promise the same thing: more words, faster, without hiring a writer. The pitch sounds identical on every vendor's homepage — until the invoice arrives. Jasper charges per seat, Copy.ai charges per five seats, and ChatGPT charges per person, and those three billing models produce wildly different bills for the same team. This comparison does the maths nobody's homepage shows. We checked the current prices in November 2026 — Jasper's and ChatGPT's straight from their own pricing pages, and Copy.ai's Chat plan from its own pricing page (now at copy.ai/prices), with its workflow-plan prices from six concordant November reads — then worked out what one, three and five writers actually cost on each one, and what each tool's writing AI can and cannot do. No free-trial figures, no "from" prices without the catch, and no hands-on testing claims: we did not run these tools, we read their prices and their terms. What follows is what a small business owner needs to decide in one sitting.
Best AI writing tools for small business: the short answer
Pick ChatGPT if you write alone or your writing varies — a blog post one day, emails the next, a product description after that. Its free plan covers occasional writing, and Go at $8 a month or Plus at $20 covers a heavy solo writer. Pick Copy.ai if a small team shares one plan: Chat costs $29 a month for five seats, which is $5.80 a seat, and nobody else comes close to that number. Pick Jasper if a marketing team publishes every day and every post has to sound like the same brand: Pro is $59 a seat a month on annual billing, and it is the only one of the three built for that job. The table below is the whole comparison in one glance; the rest of this article is the maths and the catches behind it.
| Your situation | Buy this | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Solo writer, varied writing, tight budget | ChatGPT Go or Plus | $8 or $20 a month for one person; free tier covers occasional writing |
| Small team sharing one plan | Copy.ai Chat | $29 a month for 5 seats — $5.80 a seat |
| Marketing team publishing daily, everything on-brand | Jasper Pro | $59 a seat a month on annual billing ($69 monthly) |
What each writing tool actually costs per seat
The three vendors bill the same work three different ways, and the difference is worth real money. Jasper's Pro plan covers one seat: every extra writer is another $59 a month on annual billing, or $69 month to month. Copy.ai's Chat plan covers five seats for one flat price: $29 a month, or $24 on annual billing. ChatGPT's Plus plan is $20 a month per person with no annual discount, and its Business plan is $20 a seat a month on annual billing, or $25 month to month, for teams of 2 to 200. So the question is never "which tool is cheapest" — it is "cheapest for how many writers".
| Writers | ChatGPT (Plus, monthly) | Copy.ai Chat (monthly) | Jasper Pro (monthly) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $20 (Go: $8) | $29 — but 5 seats included | $69 |
| 3 | $60 (Go: $24) | $29 | $207 |
| 5 | $100 (Go: $40) | $29 | $345 |
On annual billing the gap widens in the same direction. One writer costs $20 on ChatGPT Plus, $24 on Copy.ai Chat, or $59 on Jasper Pro. Three writers cost $60 on Plus, $24 on Copy.ai, or $177 on Jasper. Five writers cost $100 on Plus, $24 on Copy.ai, or $295 on Jasper. Copy.ai's effective price per seat is $5.80 a month on monthly billing and $4.80 on annual billing — five seats for the price of one Jasper seat's coffee money. The catch, and there is always one, is in the next section: Copy.ai is the cheapest seat in this comparison because the company that sells it has moved on to selling something else.
One more number that matters, and it is a surprise: none of the three publishes a word cap on its pricing page. Jasper and Copy.ai both sell unlimited words on their paid plans — Copy.ai says so outright, "unlimited words in Chat", and Jasper's page lists no word limit at all. ChatGPT limits messages, not words: Plus gets higher message limits than the free plan, and its context window is 54K tokens for instant tasks and 256K for reasoning. So "how many words can I write" is the wrong question for all three. The right questions are brand voice, templates and SEO — and those are where the three part ways.
| Feature | Jasper | Copy.ai | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand voice | 2 voices on Pro, unlimited on Business | Listed as a platform feature; plan coverage not stated | Custom instructions only |
| Templates | 100+ purpose-built marketing agents | Template library (count not shown on the pricing page) | No template library; custom GPTs stop running 11 Dec 2026 |
| Word limits | None stated on the pricing page | Unlimited words in Chat | No word cap; message limits instead |
| SEO features | GEO on the Business plan; no SEO agent named on the pricing page | None — no keyword research, no SERP analysis | None built in |
| Free plan | No; 7-day free trial | No; free plan sunset in February 2026 | Yes; unlimited text chats |
Jasper — the most expensive way to stay on-brand
Jasper is the only one of the three built for marketing teams, and its pricing page reads like it. Pro costs $69 a month per seat billed monthly, or $59 a month on a 12-month commitment, and it covers exactly one seat. The Business plan is custom-priced and adds everything a larger team needs: unlimited brand voices, knowledge assets and audiences, API access, enterprise governance, dedicated account management, and Jasper Grid for running content at scale. There is no free plan — only a 7-day free trial — and no cheaper Creator plan on the live pricing page: a $39 Creator figure appears in some June 2026 comparisons, but jasper.ai/pricing today lists Pro and Business only.
What the money buys is brand control. Pro includes 2 brand voices, 5 knowledge assets and 3 audiences: Jasper analyses your content's tone and formatting rules, then applies them to everything it writes, so a blog post, an ad and a product page all sound like the same company. It also includes the Canvas platform for drafting, agents for core marketing workflows, image generation, and writing in 30+ languages. A plagiarism checker is available as a Copyscape add-on. For search, Jasper's Business plan includes GEO agents that track how AI answer engines cite your brand; the pricing page names no SEO agent or Surfer integration.
The catch is the seat maths. A marketing team of five pays $295 a month on annual billing — $345 month to month — for the same five writers Copy.ai covers for $24 and ChatGPT covers for $100. Jasper is worth that premium only if the brand-voice problem is real for you: if you publish every day, across channels, with more than one person writing, and a post that sounds off-brand costs you a customer. If one person writes everything, or your brand voice is "write it plainly and get the facts right", the premium buys nothing you will notice. If your marketing budget is as tight as your writing budget, our guide to free AI tools for small business marketing covers eight tools that cost nothing to start with, including Grammarly's free plan for editing.
Copy.ai — the cheapest seats, and a company that moved on
Copy.ai's Chat plan is the cheapest seat in this comparison by a distance: $29 a month billed monthly, or $24 a month on annual billing ($288 a year), for five seats with unlimited words in Chat, unlimited Chat projects, and access to OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models in one subscription. It ships with templates covering blogs, ads, emails, social posts and sales outreach, and its Brand Voice feature is listed as a platform feature, though the pricing page does not say which plan it sits on. For a small team that wants a shared chat writer, the number is hard to argue with: five people writing for $29 a month total.
But the number comes with a story you should know before you pay. Copy.ai started as a short-form AI copywriter and pivoted in 2023 to a go-to-market (GTM) AI platform for sales and marketing teams. In October 2025 it was acquired by Fullcast, a revenue-operations software company. Its roadmap, integrations and marketing now point at revenue teams automating outbound sales — and the pricing shows it. Above Chat, the pricing page as rendered today shows only an unpriced Enterprise plan — but November reads of Copy.ai's pricing listed workflow plans above Chat: Growth at $1,000 a month (75 seats, 20,000 workflow credits a month), then Expansion at $2,000 and Scale at $3,000. The jump from $29 to $1,000, with nothing in between, is the steepest cliff in this comparison.
There are two more things to know. First, there is no free plan any more: Copy.ai's own help centre says, in a billing FAQ dated 5 February 2026, "there is no longer a free plan (we had to sunset it)". Its free tools hub at copy.ai/tools still lists dozens of single-purpose generators, but that is not a plan. Second, Copy.ai is not an SEO tool: it does no keyword research, no SERP analysis and no auto-publishing, so a blog post that has to rank needs another tool in the chain. And its Trustpilot rating sits near 2 out of 5 — 1.9 in one May 2026 read, 2.3 in another — with billing and cancellation complaints the recurring theme, against 4.8 out of 5 on G2. None of that makes Chat a bad buy at $29. It makes it a buy with your eyes open: cheap seats, from a company whose attention has moved to $1,000-a-month workflow contracts.
ChatGPT — the cheapest writer, and the one with no brand voice
ChatGPT is the cheapest way to write in this comparison and the most versatile, and it is the only one of the three with a real free plan. Free gives you unlimited text chats with GPT-6 — blog drafts, captions, emails, product descriptions — with limits only on image creation, file uploads, voice chats and deep research. Go costs $8 a month. Plus costs $20 a month billed monthly, with no annual-billing option at all. Pro starts at $100 a month. For teams, the Business plan is $20 a seat a month on annual billing, or $25 month to month, for teams of 2 to 200 employees, with a Premium seat at $100 a month annual or $125 monthly.
What ChatGPT does not have is the part the other two are built around. There is no brand voice training: the closest it comes is custom instructions, where you tell it how to sound and hope it remembers. There is no template library: no AIDA or PAS frameworks, no campaign templates, no product-description generator — you write the prompt yourself, every time. Custom GPTs, the nearest thing to a reusable template, stop running on 11 December 2026, according to OpenAI. And there are no SEO features built in: no content scoring, no keyword optimisation, no brand asset management. Its context window on Plus is 54K tokens for instant tasks and 256K for reasoning, and voice mode is built in on every plan including Free.
None of that is a flaw if your writing varies. ChatGPT handles the widest range of jobs in this comparison: a blog draft, a social caption, a customer-service script, a product description, a brainstorming session — all in one subscription, at a level good enough for most small businesses. It is the best pick for a solo writer, and for anyone whose writing is not the same shape twice. If you want the full comparison of the two general assistants, our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison for small business covers what $20 a month buys on each side, including context windows and voice mode.
What the best AI writing tools for small business still can't do
The risk in this decision is not the monthly bill — it is a draft that goes out wrong under your business name. None of these three knows your customers: who they are, what they worry about, or why they buy from you instead of the shop down the road. None of them fact-checks: AI drafts read as if they are certain, even when they are wrong, so every name, number, date and price needs checking against a source you trust before it goes out. And none of them sounds like you unless you teach it: paste in two or three pieces of your own writing — a good email, a post that worked — and ask for the same tone, then edit the result. A draft you publish untouched will read like everyone else's draft, because it is.
The limits differ by tool, and they matter more than the feature lists. Jasper's premium buys brand consistency, not better writing: given the same prompt, its raw output is not meaningfully better than ChatGPT's — you are paying for the workflow, the voices and the governance around the words. Copy.ai is weakest where a small business most needs strength: long-form content over 1,000 words needs more editing than either rival, and it has no SEO features at all. ChatGPT needs the most from you: good marketing copy out of it requires good prompts, and without brand voice or templates, every piece starts from a blank page. The direction of travel is clear either way. An SBE Council survey from April 2026 found that 82% of small business employers had invested in AI tools, with the average business using five different AI products — and a writing assistant is the most common starting point. Thryv's 2025 survey of 540 small-business decision-makers found AI adoption rising from 47% to 68% in a single year. Your competitors are already drafting with AI. The question is not whether to do it — it is whether to pay per seat, per five seats, or per person.
How to pick the best AI writing tools for small business in 10 minutes
Count your writers first — the number decides everything else, because Jasper charges per seat and Copy.ai charges per five. Then count what you write in a week: if it is mostly short copy — captions, product descriptions, email subject lines — Copy.ai's templates and ChatGPT's free tier both cover it, and Jasper is overkill. If it is mostly long-form — blog posts, guides, newsletters — Jasper's brand voice and ChatGPT's long drafts are the two that hold up, and Copy.ai needs the most editing. Then ask whether your brand voice is a real problem or a nice-to-have: if more than one person writes for you and customers have ever said two of your posts sounded like different companies, it is real, and Jasper is the only one of the three built to solve it.
Solo blogger, writes alone: start on ChatGPT Free. When the free limits bite, Go at $8 a month is the cheapest paid writing in this comparison; Plus at $20 adds higher limits and the full model range.
Small team, two to five people, sharing one plan: Copy.ai Chat — $29 a month total, $5.80 a seat, with five seats and unlimited words. Check the free tools hub first if you only need the occasional caption or subject line.
Marketing team, publishing daily, everything on-brand: Jasper Pro — $59 a seat a month on annual billing. Take the 7-day free trial and feed it your best three pieces first: if the brand voices come back sounding like you, it is worth the premium; if they do not, no template library will save it.
Agency or a team that will outgrow Chat: do not buy Copy.ai for the workflows — the next tier is $1,000 a month with nothing in between. Price Jasper Business or build the workflow in ChatGPT Business instead. All of our marketing guides live in one place — see the marketing and content category.
Why it matters: the first 30 days decide whether it pays
Start small and measure honestly. Feed the tool your 20 most-used pieces first — the product descriptions, the emails, the posts that actually brought customers — and leave the rest with humans. Watch the editing time, not the word count: if a draft still needs an hour of fixing, the tool is not saving you anything, whatever its price. Set the fact-check rule before launch — who checks names, prices and dates, and how fast — because that rule is what keeps a wrong draft off your website.
Of the best AI writing tools for small business, the cheapest is the one whose billing matches your team size: ChatGPT for one writer, Copy.ai for a small team sharing a plan, Jasper when the brand voice is worth paying per seat for. Prices move — Jasper's page has already dropped one plan since June, and Copy.ai's free plan is gone — so check the vendor's pricing page again on the day you buy, and re-check it at renewal. The writing is the easy part. The bill is the decision. We price-check every figure in our guides on the vendors' own pages before publishing — read how we work.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI writing tool for small business?
It depends on how many people write. Of the best AI writing tools for small business, ChatGPT is the best pick for a solo writer (free tier, or Go at $8 a month), Copy.ai Chat is the best pick for a small team ($29 a month for 5 seats), and Jasper Pro is the best pick for a marketing team publishing daily on-brand ($59 a seat a month on annual billing). There is no single best tool — there is a best tool for your team size.
How much does Jasper cost per month?
Jasper Pro costs $69 a month per seat billed monthly, or $59 a month per seat on a 12-month commitment, and it covers exactly one seat. A team of five pays $345 a month billed monthly, or $295 on annual billing. The Business plan is custom-priced. There is no free plan — only a 7-day free trial — and no cheaper Creator plan on the live pricing page.
Is Copy.ai still a writing tool?
Partly. Copy.ai's Chat plan ($29 a month, or $24 on annual billing, for 5 seats with unlimited words in Chat) is still a writing tool, with templates and access to OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models. But the company pivoted in 2023 to a go-to-market platform for sales teams, was acquired by Fullcast in October 2025, and its workflow plans start at $1,000 a month. It has no free plan any more, and it does no keyword research, no SERP analysis and no auto-publishing.
Is ChatGPT good for business writing?
Yes, for varied writing. ChatGPT's free plan gives you unlimited text chats for drafts, captions, emails and product descriptions, Go costs $8 a month and Plus costs $20 a month with no annual-billing option. Its limits are structural: no brand voice training, no template library, and no SEO features built in, so good marketing copy needs good prompts and a human editor.
What is the cheapest AI writing tool for a small team?
Copy.ai Chat, by a distance: $29 a month billed monthly, or $24 on annual billing, for five seats with unlimited words in Chat — $5.80 a seat monthly, or $4.80 on annual billing. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a person, so five writers pay $100 a month; Jasper Pro costs $59 a seat a month on annual billing, so five writers pay $295. Of the best AI writing tools for small business, Copy.ai is the cheapest for a small team — but only while five seats is enough, because the next tier is $1,000 a month.
